Human rights defender Uladzimir Vialichkin has submitted a complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee to challenge a ban on holding a picket in support of the imprisoned leader of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski.
Brest city executive committee banned the event on the grounds that the applicant failed to sign contracts with local police, medical and housing departments. Uladizmir Vialiachkin’s attempts to appeal the ban at national courts were not successful. The human rights defender believes that the city authorities violated his rights to freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly.
