The head of the Hrodna regional branch of the Belarusian Popular Front Vadzim Saranchukou has been fined 1 million rubles for taking part in commemoration of participants of the anti-Russian uprising of 1863-1864.

As stated by Mr. Saranchukou, he was fined the same sum as the Svislach activists, but more than other Hrodna residents (who were fined 800,000 rubles for participation in the event).

"Today I have received the ruling of the Svislach District Court, according to which I had been sentenced to pay a fine for a violation of the Administrative Code. The judge explained his verdict by stating that I had violated four articles of two laws of the Republic of Belarus, and also the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, which sounds absurd," commented the activist.

In particular, Vadzim Saranchukou was charged with violating the Law "On Mass Events" and Article 19 of the Constitution, "About the state symbols of the Republic of Belarus". The politician is going to appeal the verdict of the Svislach District Court of 27 December. According to the law, he must do it before 6 January.
