The department of culture of Baranavichy city executive committee has refused to provide the premises of the city library for a meeting with historian Anatol Taras.

“A few years ago the Society of Belarusian Language and history lovers arranged many cultural events in cooperation with the administration of the Central Library. They would like organize on January 27 a meeting on local history with participation of the well-known publisher of history books Anatol Taras. The event was expected to be held in the library,” says local pro-democratic activist Viktar Syrytsa. “However, the head of the department of culture Henadz Charniauski wrote in his response that “the schedule of mass events of the central library does not feature your activity. In connection with the above, it is impossible to provide premises for events arranged by side organizations.”

It is well known that libraries are run on taxpayers’ money. However, citizens cannot use of the libraries, because their right depends on the will of a small local official.
