Homel human rights defenders appeal ban on picket in support of Bialiatski to Supreme Court
Homel human
rights defenders Anatol Paplauny, Leanid Sudalenka and former chairman of the
city executive committee Sviatlana Holdade filed a joint complaint to Chairman of
the Supreme Court Valiantsin Sukala, urging the high official to overturn the
decision by local executive authorities to ban a picket expected to be held on
August 4, 2012 as part of a campaign in support of human rights defender Ales
Bialiatski, www.gomelspring.org reports.
“We
were going to stage a picket on 4 August – the day when Ales Bialiatski was arrested.
The
public event was expected to draw public attention to the problem of all political
prisoners, not only Ales Bialiatski, who, we believe, was convicted illegally,”
said former Mayor of Homel Sviatlana Holdade.
She
noted that the event in support of Ales Bialiatski was planned as a nation-wide
action, which was an initiative of human rights defenders. Applications
for the pickets were filed in all regional capitals and other cities.
