Mahiliou activists apply for authorization of festivities dated to 95th anniversary of Belarusian People's Republic
The activists ask Mahiliou City
Executive Committee to authorize the festive actions in honor of the
proclamation of the Belarusian People's Republic and take an active
part in them.
"This time, we chose another format for our
actions", says the head of the Coordinative Board of Mahiliou
regional coalition of democratic forces, Yury Novikau. "We
refused from the traditional format of rallies, pickets and
processions and intend to hold real festivities with dances, reading
of poems, etc. We would also like the local authorities to join our
initiative," commented the activist.
According to Mr.
Novikau, the festive actions will be held at 6 p.m. on 24 March in
the city center. The concrete place will be announced as soon as the
city authorities grant the application.
"The date wasn't
chosen by chance. The sitting of the Council of the Republic, at
which the Belarusian People's Republic was proclaimed as an
independent and sovereign state, started on 24 March 1918 and lasted
for almost 20 hours. In those times, the idea to proclaim the
Belarusian Popular Republic was upheld by the majority of delegates,
and this fact must be counted with," says Mr. Novikau.
It's
worth mentioning that the application for the action was filed by
Yury Novikau, an activist of the Free Trade Union of Belarus Siarhei
Famin and the head of Mahiliou regional branch of the Belarusian
Popular Front Zmitser Salauyou.
