Zhlobin District Court resumed today the trial of a member of the “Fair World” United Leftist Party Yauhen Basareuski. The trial was expected to start yesterday, March 26, but was resumed only today, after a number of witnesses failed to appear in court. The case was heard by Judge Alena Yarmolchyk.

The court heard several witnesses, including former employees of the Zhlobin-based control center of the district communal property, which used to be headed by Yauhen Basareuski, as well as the heads of the departments of economics and finance of Zhlobin district executive committee Maryna Kalichonak and Aliaksandr Makeyeu.

Maryna Kalichonak testified that she disagreed with the conclusions of the State Control Committee arguing that Basareuski’s company failed to pay 50% of the rent to the local budget, and thus caused damage to the state. Aliaksandr Makeyeu also noted that the control center of the district communal property could not exist at all, if the company was operating at a loss, bringing no profits.

The court session was postponed to an indefinite date.

On December 7, 2012 Judge Ina Sharshniova of Zhlobin District Court sentenced Yauhen Basareuski to three years of suspended imprisonment, and his former colleague Mrs. Valiantsina Kastsiukevich to four years of restriction of liberty without sending her to penitentiary facilities with partial cancellation of the term by one year. Both later appealed the verdict at Homel Regional Court, which sent the case back for reinvestigation.
