Vitsebsk activist sues Ministry of Finance over failure to implement decision by UN Human Rights Committee
The Court of Chyhunachny district of Vitsebsk started yesterday its first session to hear the lawsuit brought by pro-democratic activist Antanina Pivanos against the Chief Directorate of the Ministry of Finance.
The activist demands compensation for the property seized from her in March 2008, as ordered by the UN Human Rights Committee. Mrs. Pivanos also wants the authorities to reimburse the fine she was sentenced to for the offence she did not commit.
Antanina Pivanos was fined for illegal picketing, after the policemen seized a hand-made tapestry she was going to present to local opposition activist Barys Khamaida on the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic.
Later, the UN Human Rights Committee said that the activist’s civil and political rights were violated, and urged the Belarusian authorities to restore justice. However, the Committee’s decision was ignored by the official Minsk.
