Activist Uladzimir Shyla is appealing a ban imposed by Salihorsk district executive committee on a mass event expected to be held on Freedom Day. The appeal will be heard by Minsk Regional Court.

In early May, the District Court of Salihorsk dismissed the activist’s complaint against the decision of local officials to ban the rally. A few days ago, Uladzimir Shyla received the motivation for this decision and immediately undertook to prepare the appeal.

“Salihorsk Court was seriously in thinking that my request to impose duties on local authorities to ensure public order and safety during the picketing is a sufficient reason to restrict my right to freedom of peaceful assembly. We’ll see what will be the opinion on the matter by the Regional Court,” says Uladzimir Shyla.

On Monday, May 20, the organizer of the rally on Freedom Day sent an appeal to the court. The activist urges Minsk Regional Court to follow not only the provisions of the Law “On Mass Events,” but also the relevant articles of the Constitution and the country’s international obligations in the field of human rights.
