Ales Bialiatski, chairman of the Human Rights Center "Viasna", has been in prison since 4 August 2011. In November the same year, he was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison and confiscation of property for alleged tax evasion. In fact, the sentence is related to Ales Bialiatski’s work for human rights in Belarus.

A message from the world outside means a lot for him. The Swedish human rights initiative Civil Rights Defenders has launched a campaign in support of Ales. The activists ask all concerned people to sign letters in support of Ales to show him that you care and help him keep his spirits high!

Sign this petition before 12 July to add your name to the letter. Civil Rights Defenders will send it by regular mail in the end of July.

Ales' comment regarding the attention reveals his kind and humble nature:

Such international support confuses me, I think that I do not deserve it. The only thing that reassures me is that these people do not just support me personally, but express their protest against the systematic violation of human rights. It is a clear and simple message to all Belarusians."

Ales Bialiatski has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize twice, his courageous and persistent activities for human rights have been recognized by numerous international awards.
