Belarusian Christian Democracy applies to the prosecutor's office on priest Lazar's case
The co-chairman
of the organizing committee of the party "Belarusian Christian
Democracy" Vital Rymashevski and its
executive
secretary Dzianis
Sadouski filed to the Office of the Prosecutor General a collective
appeal
in the case of the
Catholic priest of
the
parish of the
Holy
Spirit in Barysau,
Uladzislau Lazar.
The
appeal notes that the priest
has been kept in the KGB remand prison for more than two months
already.
“We
see
a general increase of the pressurization of the Christian community
in Belarus on the examples of the Protestant and the Catholic
denominations. We filed another appeal with the demand to be provided
with a detailed information about the priest's whereabouts and the
reasons for his keeping in this place. Referring to the legislation
we propose to the prosecutor's office to consider the
question on releasing priest
Lazar on
bail or a written non-leave undertaking,” commented Mr.
Sadouski.
"This
case has got a wide resonance in the Belarusian society, it doesn't
disappear from the pages of the media, more than a thousand people
subscribed the petition for the release of Uladzislau Lazar during
the first week. However, despite
the considerable attention and efforts of the Belarusian society to
find
out what is the priest accused in, why he was detained and which
penalty he may face, the KGB continues keeping silent, refraining
from any comments,"
says
the
document.
