Viktar Ivashkevich died

The
well-known political activist Viktar Ivashkevich was born on 21
September 1959 in Minsk.
He was a member of "Maistrounia”,
“Talaka” and the Belarusian Popular Front. Mr. Ivashkevich
organized strike committees at the Minsk enterprises in 1991, has
been frequently subjected to administrative penalties and
arrests.
Viktar Ivashkevich was also the editor of the
newspaper “Rabochy”. In 2002 he was sentenced to two years of
personal restraint for publishing the article “Thief must be kept
in prison”, in which the prosecutors saw the defamation of the
president.
Mr. Ivashkevich was the Deputy chairman of the
Belarusian Popular Front up to 2009. Until February 2011 he was the
head of the Minsk city BPF organization.
During the recent
times the politician was seriously ill, he was 55 years old.
The
Human Rights Center "Viasna" expresses condolences to the
families and friends of Ivashkevich.
