Uladzimir Yaromenak’s appeal to be heard on November 12
The appeal will be considered in the Minsk City Court.
On August 20, Uladzimir Yaromenak was accused of violating the rules of preventive supervision (Article 421 of the Criminal Code of Belarus), which once again had been set for the activist on March 15, 2013 for a period of 6 months.
In January 2011, Yaromenak was arrested as a suspect in the “rioting” case. He was sentenced to three years and served his sentence in a colony near Vitsebsk. In August 2011, among other defendants in the case, Uladzimir was pardoned. Since then, he has several times found himself behind bars on administrative charges for participating in protest.
The criminal case of Uladzimir Yaromenak on charges of violating preventive supervision restrictions was considered by Judge Leanid Yarmolenka, the charges were presented by prosecutor Charapkovich. The verdict was announced on August 20 and the activist was sentenced to 3 months of arrest.
The activist of "Young Front" filed an appeal against the decision of the court. However, if the sentence remains unchanged, Yaromenak will have to serve a 3-month custody.
The Human Rights Center "Viasna" believes that the sentencing of Uladzimir Yaromenak is an obvious factor that indicates a worsening of the human rights situation in the country, reinforcing the ongoing negative trend of recent months in this sphere. That is why the human rights defenders in a statement called on the Belarusian authorities to stop the prosecution of Uladzimir Yaromenak and to put an end to the practice of politically motivated persecution of political activists, human rights defenders, journalists and political opponents of the current regime.
