Biaroza human rights defenders appeal picket ban to Brest Regional Court
Biaroza human rights defenders are appealing the ruling of the district court who sided with the executive committee in banning a rally that was planned for October 10. They sent their appeal to the Brest Regional Court. Human rights activist Siarhei Rusetski notes:
“We planned to hold a picket on October 10, timed to coincide with the World Day against the Death Penalty. At this event, we would like to express our attitude to the fact that our country is the only one in Europe that still applies the death penalty.
The ban referred to the fact that there were no contracts with the police, hospital and public utilities along with the application. But it is impossible to fulfill this requirement in practice.
Human rights defender Tamara Shchapiotkina submitted the contracts to the police, medical and public utilities services in due time. Human rights activists petitioned the executive committee urging the officials to assist in signing the contracts, but did not receive any help.
