House of Representatives will not apply to the Constitutional Court concerning discrimination of Belarusian-speaking citizens

At the end of November, human rights activist Valiantsin Stefanovich applied to the Constitutional Court to determine the compatibility of Article 7 of the Law “On Languages” and Article 54 of the Law “On Normative Legal Acts” with the Constitution. He also applied to the Chamber of Representatives, the Council of the Republic, the Supreme Court, the Supreme Economic Court, the Council of Ministers and the President – all those who have the right to submit inquiries to the Constitutional Court on the conformity of laws with the Constitution.

The human rights activist noted that the Law of the Republic of Belarus "On languages in the Republic of Belarus" (Article 7 ) and the Law of the Republic of Belarus "On normative legal acts of the Republic of Belarus" (Article 54 ) do not retain the guarantees of equality of two official languages and, according to Stefanovich, are contrary to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus (Article 17).

Recently Mr. Stefanovich has received an answer from the House of Representatives, signed by the chairman of the Standing Committee on Education, Culture and Science Henadz Palchyk.

"Having carefully considered the question You raised, we inform You that the Commission hasn't found no reasons to appeal to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Belarus", reads theanswer.
