Brest police detain and send to mental hospital guy who staged performance in front of Regional Executive Committee building
Ales Charkashyn was dressed as a "prophet", his hands were tied with chains and doused with red paint. It symbolized the blood of Belarusians. During the performance, the activist urged the authorities to repent for their sins against the people.
Otherwise, the "prophet" says the country will face misfortune.
The man was detained by police just 10 minutes after the performance began on the porch of the executive committee building. He was taken to the police station where he was charged with organizing an unsanctioned rally, says the leader of the Belarusian Christian Democrats’ regional office Zmitser Shurkhai.
However, as a result, Ales Charkashyn was taken by hospital staff. Now he is in a psychiatric hospital. According to a police representative, the activist can spend there up to three days.
Zmitser Shurkhai says it is a groundless decision, as Charkashyn is a normal and adequate person. And there was no reason to detain him.
Mr. Shurkhai adds that Charkashyn is a member of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, but this performance was exclusively his own initiative.
