Chair of the Brest Regional Court upholds the picket ban

Chairperson of the Brest Regional Court Tamara Suchok did not satisfy the lawsuit of Biaroza human rigths defenders against the ban on the picket they intended to hold on August 4 to support political prisoners, and left the prior verdict of the Biaroza District Court and the panel of judges of the Brest Regional Court unchanged.

As noted by human rights activist Siarhei Rusetski, Tamara Suchokrepeated the decision of her colleagues almost word for word:

“The Biaroza District Court, the panel of judges of the Brest Regional Court and the Chairperson of the Brest Regional Court concluded that the decision of the executive committee about the necessity to enter into service contracts with the police, ambulance and public utilities during the organization of mass events is not contrary to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. She evaded from a detailed consideration of our objections confirming that such requirements fall short of international standards of freedom of peaceful assembly.”

According to Mr. Rusetski, the human rights defenders intend to appeal to the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court fails to protect their right to public expression through pickets and other events, they will appeal to the Committee on Human Rights of the United Nations.
