Vaukavysk authorities ban picket of solidarity with Ukrainian Maidan protesters

Vital Huliak, an activist from the town of Vaukavysk, Hrodna region, was not allowed to stage a picket in solidarity with the Ukrainian Maidan protest scheduled for January 25. The application for holding a picket in the town park (officially authorized location for street events) was filed on January 9. The official response is dated January 17.

A response, signed by the deputy chairman of the executive committee Uladzimir Zakharchuk, states the following: "In accordance with Article 2 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus of 30 December, 1997 "On Mass Events”, [...] a street procession is an organized mass movement of a group of citizens along the sidewalk or roadway (road) of a street, boulevard, avenue, square. Thus, the mass event, for permission of which you have applied, is impossible to be held in the town park."

The activist says it is simply impossible to understand anything from this answer.

Vital Huliak is preparing a complaint to the court.
