Supreme Court dismisses appeal against annulment of registration of electoral teams

Mikalai Ulasevich, civil society activist from the Astravets district, received an official response from the Supreme Court, where he tried to appeal the decision of the Central Electoral Commission to cancel the registration of his two initiative groups. On 29 January Judge of the Supreme Court judge's decision V. Kulik upheld the CEC decision and refused to instigate civil proceedings, stating that “norms of the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus and other legislative acts do not provide for appeal against the decisions of the CEC about the cancellation of registration of the initiative groups for collecting signatures. The decision is not subject to appeal."

Mikalai Ulasevich disagrees with such interpretation of the legislation. He is convinced that articles 21, 22, 23 and 60 of the Constitution, to which he referred in his complaints, provide a number of guarantees, including the right to judicial protection by a competent and independent court.

Therefore, Mikalai Ulasevich intends to file a complaint with the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations in connection with the lack of access to justice.
