Aleh Kirol detained in Minsk, trial pending
In the evening of 13 May, Aleh Kerul was detained near the National Library in Minsk. He posted stickers with the text calling for solidarity with activists detained on the eve of the world ice hockey championship. Aleh Kerul managed to inform human rights defenders that he was taken to Pershamaiski district department of internal affairs of Minsk. According to human rights defenders, the court hearing will most likely take place tomorrow, in Pershamaiski district court.
One the eve of the world championship, Belarusian authorities carried out a “political cleanup” having arrested oppositional activists.
The pattern was the same: an activist is detained near his home and taken to the court where he is routinely charged with petty hooliganism and non-obedience to law enforcement officials. The court sentence is an administrative arrest for 10-25 days. In this manner, about 30 persons were arrested throughout Belarus.
