Brest local authorities ignore the law on protection of the rights of children with disabilities
This conclusion was made by public prosecutor’s office of Brest region was checking whether the legislation on the protection of rights and legal interests of children with disabilities and children with special needs is complied with.
The check revealed that local executives do not always take sufficient measures to protect the rights of such children, especially when it comes to measures to create barrier-free environment for the disabled. As a result, only after demands of the prosecutor's office ramps in the pediatric wards of clinics of Drahichyn, Stolin and Ivatsevichy central district hospitals were built.
In addition, shortcomings in social services, as well as illegal collection of money for food for disabled children during treatment were brought to light. Such facts have occurred in Kamianetski, Biarozauski, Ivatsevichtski, Pruzhanski and Liahovichski districts where children with disabilities are provided with free meals now.
According to the Committee on Labour, Employment and Social Protection, the Brest region is a home to 4,506 families raising 4,614 children with disabilities.
