On June 23, the Minsk office of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” will host a press conference of the organization’s leader and vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights, Ales Bialiatski, who was released on Saturday after almost three years of arbitrary detention.

The political prisoner was released from penal colony No. 2 in Babruisk on June 21, after a bill on amnesty entered into force.

Ales Bialiatski was arrested on August 4, 2011 and has been in prison for his human rights work for almost three years. All this time, the European Union, the United States and international human rights organizations repeatedly called upon the Belarusian authorities to release the human rights defender. The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the UN Human Rights Council said in its decision that the detention of Ales Bialiatski was arbitrary.
