Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatski and European Parliament President Martin Schulz exchanged information on the situation in Belarus.

"My signal to Mr. Schultz was to continue the efforts they have made for all these years, since December of 2010, for the release of political prisoners. It is also necessary that they continue to demand complex changes related to human rights and the state of democracy in Belarus," Ales Bialiatski commented to RFE/RL after the meeting.

"Mr. Schultz is aware of what is happening with us. I think this is a good start of the European Parliament - that they do not deprive Belarus of the attention we used to have, even despite the current situation in our region", - added Mr. Bialiatski.

Earlier, former political prisoner, head of the Human Rights Center "Viasna" and Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights Ales Bialiatski met with Commissioner in matters Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Anne Brasseur.

Ales Bialiatski was released on June 21 under the law on amnesty. The human rights activist was arrested Aug. 4, 2011, imprisoned for political reasons and he spent a total of 1052 days in jail.
