Intigam Aliyev, a prominent Azerbaijani human rights activist, was detained in Baku on 8 August and taken into custody for three months on the charges earlier brought against a number of other human rights defenders representing unregistered NGOs, including tax evasion (Article 213.1 of the Criminal Code), abuse of power, which entailed grave consequences (Article 308.2) and illegal business activities (Article 192.2). His organization, the Legal Education Society, was engaged in the provision of legal assistance to citizens, including in the preparation of complaints to the European Court of Human Rights. The NGO also arranged educational programs for young lawyers, many of whom later became counsels and protected the rights of political prisoners.
