The Supreme Court did not put an end to the case of man died in temporary holding facility of Svetlahorsk

The mother of Alexander Akulich is seeking punishment for employees of Svetlahorsk police department for the death of her son. There appeared a hope that her complaint about the refusal to institute criminal proceedings, previously dismissed by the Svetlahorsk regional court, will be reviewed.

Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court, having considered the complaint prepared by human rights activists, September 22 lodged for cancellation of the Svetlahorsk regional court order and referral of the case for a new investigation in this court. Valentine Akulich said about this to Human Rights Center "Viasna".
This protest must be investigated by the Presidium of the Gomel Regional Court in the beginning of October, which gives hope that next case will be sent to the Svetlahorsk regional court for a new investigation. Valentine Akulich also hopes that she will have the opportunity to attend the upcoming meeting in regional court. It should be noted that this issue will be resolved only by the court. The law gives the right to the prosecutor to participate in the hearing of the protest, but the defender and the applicant may participate in this hearing only with the permission of the Presidium of the court.
