Vaukavysk social activist Vital Huliak received a response from the Supreme Court to his appeal, signed by the deputy chair of the Supreme Court Valery Kalinkovich.

The Supreme Court ignored the arguments, set forth in the appeal, and believes that the activist has been fined in compliance with the acting legislation. “You were punished not for exercising your right to freedom of expression but for a violation of the legal order of its exercising”, reads the document.

Bear in mind that on March 13, 2014 the civil society activist was detained by the Vaukavysk police for holding a one-man picket in support of the Ukraine. He went out to the square of soldiers-internationalists with a blue-yellow flag and the poster “Stop the War! Putin get away!”. On March 17, Judge of the Vaukavysk District Court Mikalai Talashka fined him 1,3 million rubles and ruled for the destruction of the items seized from the picketer.

The appeal, filed by the activist to the Hrodna Regional Court, was dismissed. Now, having received the answer from the Supreme Court the activist has depleted the national remedies and intends to apply to the Human Rights Committee of the UN.
