Human Rights Day greetings in Baranavichy
Despite the official ban on the picket on December 10 human rights defenders and social activists held an action in Baranavichy on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The activists handed out to citizens booklets with the text of the Declaration, as well as information materials on human rights issues.
“Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 33 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus declares the right of everyone to freedom of opinion and freedom of expression. Therefore today, December 10, we decided to congratulate residents of Baranavichyon the International Human Rights Day. During meetings on the street we not only congratulated people on the holiday, but also discussed with them the contract system of employment, the passiveness of the state trade unions and their inability to defend workers' rights. The overwhelming majority of people paid a friendly attitude to our activities and emphasized that nowadays workers have just duties, being factually rightless,” says the human rights activist Siarhei Housha.
