Baranavichy: children are offered to learn in Belarusian in a village school ten kilometers away from home

Parents of pupils of the former Belarusian-language form in Baranavichy, Tatsiana and Aleh Malashchakas and Antanina and Vasil Filipchyks filed a repeated appeal to the Prosecutor General.

They point that their first appeal regarding the failure of the Baranavichy City Executive Committee, the Brest Regional Executive Committee and the Ministry of Education wasn't considered by the Office of Prosecutor General on its merits, but forwarded to the Ministry of Education.

“Instead of bringing to justice the perpetrators and making local, regional and ministerial officials to comply with the law on languages, the General Prosecutor's Office sent our request for consideration to those who break the law and our rights. We are outraged that the Ministry of Education proposed that our children learn in Belarusian not in Baranavichy, but in a village school, located ten kilometers away from our home. We live in Baranavichy and want our children to be educated in mother-tongue in our city. Article 50 of the Constitution guarantees us the use of the Belarusian language and the freedom to choose the language of education and training. Therefore, we again appeal to the Attorney General and ask him not to evade from considering our appeal on its merits and urgently protect our right to be taught in Belarusian,” commented Tatsiana Malashchanka.
