Representatives of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee in Salihorsk report the expansion of barrier-free environment in the city. These findings are part of activities for the preparation of another monitoring on the rights of persons with disabilities in the region.

According to the human rights defenders, it is early to voice any serious conclusions about the system changes in the issue:

“The work on monitoring has just started. However, our first observations give grounds for optimism,” says local representative of the BHC Leanid Markhotka. “We were particularly struck by mechanical lifts for wheelchair users near the entrances to newly built apartment buildings.”

The human rights activists have been also able to witness the presence of the promised specialized low-floor buses on several important routes for wheelchair users. BHC representatives are hoping that in the course of monitoring they will see the implementation of other recommendations relating to barrier-free environment in the city.
