Prosecutor’s Office orders to investigate threats to human rights activist and his children

Today, March 23, human rights activist Leanid Sudalenka was interviewed by a police inspector of the Chyhunachny district police department of Homel Andrei Padsasonny. He learned that the City Prosecutor’s Office had quashed a decision not to open a criminal investigation into the threats to the human rights defenders and his children and demanded that the police took all measures possible to identify the IP-address of those who disseminated the information.
Earlier, Leanid Sudalenka sent to the Homel City Prosecutor a complaint against a decision of the Chyhunachny district police department to refuse to open a criminal investigation into the death threats against his family. He asked to identify the IP-address of those who threatened him over the Internet and to institute criminal proceedings under Article 186 of the Criminal Code ("death threats").
“Today I added a new fact to my statement. On February 28, unknown persons emailed another threat against my family. The letter had a link to the video about the murder of Russian politician Boris Nemtsov, who was shot in Moscow on February 27. It was accompanied by a question: "Do you like the video?". The e-mail was sent from an address registered in the name of my five year old son. Needless to say that my child has nothing to do with the address,” said Leanid Sudalenka.
The threats against the human rights defender were criticized by Front Line Defenders, who said that they were deeply concerned about the physical and psychological safety and integrity of Leanid Sudalenka and his children. According to Front Line Defenders, the death threats against human rights defender of the family were related to his legitimate and peaceful human rights activities, in particular his advocacy work on the case of Aliaksandr Hrunou, who was executed in 2014, and his mother Volha Hrunova, which continues demanding to disclose the burial place of her executed son.
