Residents of Bialyničy protest against construct of shop in former Catholic cemetery
Bialyničy have filed an appeal to Bialyničy District Executive Committee to express their disagreement with the construction of a shop of the district consumer society on the territory of a former Catholic cemetery. The appeal was signed by 117 citizens of Bialyničy district.
The initiator of the collection of signatures under the appeal to the Executive Committee is a native of Bialyničy Viachaslau Hrybaila. He says that many residents of the urban settlement were indignant that the district executive committee had permitted the construction of a shop in formed Catholic cemetery, and the preparation to it was conducted without any public discussion. Meanwhile, there are many empty plots of land on the territory of Bialyničy and it is quite strange that somebody would need to build a shop precisely on the territory of a former cemetery.
Meanwhile, at present Bialyničy have almost no monuments of culture and history, though the town used to have a nice and magnificent monastery of Carmelites, whose buildings were destroyed in the postwar period by local communist authorities. Therefore, people eagerly signed under the appeal to the district authorities.
At present the construction of the shop is suspended. According to unofficial information, the builders will be waiting for a conclusion of the historians as to whether the site is of any historical value. However, residents of Bialyničy are ready to continue expressing their protest in case the construction of the shop will continue in the same place.
