The Court of Minsk’s Centraĺny district heard today the administrative charges brought against Belarusian Popular Front leader Aliaksei Yanukevich and deputy chairman of the Movement “For Freedom” Yury Hubarevich. They were accused of participating in an unauthorized mass event (Part 1, Art. 23.34 of the Administrative Code) staged on October 4 in central Minsk to protest against the Russian military bases in Belarus.

As a result, Judge Viktoryia Shabunia ruled to punish Yury Hubarevich with a fine of 3.6 mln rubles. The same penalty was imposed on Aliaksei Yanukevich.

Earlier, fined a number of opposition activists and politicians were convicted of involvement in the protest: on October 9, the District Court fined UCP leader Anatoly Liabedzka and former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich, as well as Viachaslau Siuchyk, Ales Marachkin, Uladzimir Niakliayeu, Ales Taustyka, Aliaksandr Mekh, and Maksim Viniarski.
