Activists detained during memorial picket in Haradok
Leanid Autukhou, leader of the Viciebsk regional branch of the Belarusian Popular Front, staged yesterday a picket in the town of Haradok to mark the day of remembrance for the victims of Stalinist repression. However, the unauthorized protest was stopped by local police officers only twenty minutes after its beginning.
The event was held in the city center, opposite the executive committee building. Leanid Autukhou lit several candles and unfolded a white-red-white flag.
As a result, the activist was detained, along with Ms. Alena Radkevich, and brought to the local police station.
Unable to find an interpreter with a good command of the Belarusian language, law enforcement officials released the activists without charges about an hour after the arrest.
