Human rights defender Pavel Levinau was detained yesterday evening by police officers in Viciebsk. The activist will serve 15 days of administrative detention.

Levinau wrote in his Facebook account that during his stay in jail he will monitor the conditions of detention, attaching an assignment from the Belarusian Helsinki Committee.

On April 17, Judge Ina Hrabouskaya of the Kastryčnicki district of Viciebsk sentenced Levinau to 15 days of administrative detention for participation in unauthorized protests on 25 and 26 March. The trial was held in absentia, as the defendant was receiving treatment outside Belarus. The sentence was later confirmed by the Viciebsk Regional Court.

On May 5, after returning to Belarus, Pavel Levinau was detained by the police, but was taken to hospital due to high blood pressure. A few days later, he underwent surgery. The human rights activist was discharged from hospital last week.
