The Orsha coalition of democratic forces sent greeting letters to the 12 Belarusian political prisoners on the eve of the New Year holidays. The coalition participants wished all convicts spiritual strength, tenacity and faith in a better future for the new Belarus. The letter was signed by representatives of nine political parties and initiatives.

Last weekend the civil activists from Salihorsk expressed their solidarity with the imprisoned human rights defender Ales Bialiatski. The action was initiated by the local representatives of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee and the editorial office of the saligorsk.org website.

At its 64th session, the United Nations (UN) Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) adopted decision A/HRC/WGAD/2012/39, published on November 23, in which it found that the detention of Mr. Ales Bialiatski, President of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Viasna” and FIDH Vice-President, was arbitrary.

02.01.2013 Hrodna human rights defenders are summonsed to court
The Hrodna human rights defender Uladzimir Khilmanovich received a summons to the Leninski District Court of Hrodna. On 5 January he will be tried there for alleged participation in an unauthorized picket.

The fact that the political prisoner remains in Babruisk-based penal colony is confirmed by the letters he continues sending – of 18th, 20th, 24th December. Ales says that almost all of his free time is occupied by letters. Letters and postcards with words of support coming in large numbers – sometimes more than a hundred of them comes in just a day.
