05.11.2008 Astravets: civil initiative against construction of nuclear power plant

The organizing committee of the civil initiative against construction of a new power plant has been established by seven citizens with a teacher of geography Mikalai Ulasevich at the head. The committee has issued a note of protest against the plans of the Belarusian officials to construct a new power-plant on the territory of Narach-Vileika natural reserve. They believe that as a result this place can become another ‘Chernobyl hole’ on the map of Europe.

17.10.2008 Activists detained for green protest

According to Radio Liberty, Hrodna police detained three persons, including activists of the For Freedom movement Edvard Dmukhouski and Nadzeia Krapivina and teacher Ihar Lapekha, that organized an action of protest against a number of trees being cut down by the town communal services.

Representatives of the antinuclear public initiative in Horki distract of Mahiliou oblast have collected more than 2.5 thousand signatures against the construction of a nuclear power station in Belarus. BelaPAN was informed about it by the press-secretary of the initiative Eduard Brokarau.

06.06.2008 Court fines teacher for protesting against construction of chemical plant

5 June Pukhavichy district court tried the administrative cases against the Tatsiana Dylkova and Nasta Papova, former teachers from the settlement of Druzhny who had taken part in the unauthorized meeting of the local citizens in protest against the construction of a chemical plant in the location by the Russian company Avgust-Bel.

22 May the judge of Pukhavichy district court Sviatlana Akulich ruled to fine the civil activist Siarhei Abrazouski 1.4 million rubles for alleged organization of an unauthorized rally against the construction of a chemical plant near Minsk heating station #5.

15.05.2008 Authorities demand actions of protest against chemical plant be stopped

A group of state officials headed by the energy minister Alexander Aziartsou has met with the working collective of heat station #5 in the settlement of Druzhny (Pukhavichy district). Earlier the officials demanded that the people stopped the actions of protest against the construction of a chemical plant, started by the Russian company Avgust-Bel. The activists stay they will sue on this issue.

14.05.2008 Vitsebsk: Siarhei Kavalenka fined

The judge of Chyhunachny district court of Vitsebsk Uladzislau Shykarou ruled to fine the activist of the Conservative-Christian Party Belarusian People’s Front Siarhei Kavalenka under part 3 of Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code (violation of the rules for organizing and holding mass actions) for participation in a peaceful mass action on 26 April, dedicated to an anniversary of Chernobyl accident.

22.04.2008 Police seize leaflets for Chernobyl March

On April 21st Frunzenski district police seized 30,000 leaflets for the Chernobyl March, permitted by the authorities.

Activists of the Movement for Freedom were detained for stickers which invited citizens to join the march. Frunzenski district police drew up report about seizure of the printed materials despite the fact that the action was permitted by the authorities. According to the police, the stickers were seized for checking the publisher of the materials.

Authoritative Belarusian scientists have initiated the movement For Non-nuclear Belarus. Among them there are Professor Heorhi Lepin and the candidates of technical sciences Yahor Fiadziushyn and Viktar Yushko. They intend to oppose to the politically motivated decision of the Belarusian authorities on building a nuclear power plant in the country.
