05.10.2010 Activists campaigning for abolition of death penalty in Belarus detained on Lithuanian border

On 5 October the activists of the campaign Human Rights Defenders against Death Penalty Palina Stsepanenka and Iryna Toustsik were detained at the border point Kamenny Loh. The Belarusian customs officer set them down from the bus Vilnius-Minsk by which they were returning home from Vilnius.

28.09.2010 Zhodzina activist detained

On 27 September, Zhodzina police detained local youth activist Andrei Zubr. He was taken to the nearest police station and released three hours later. The police seized 216 copies of the ‘Tut i tsiaper’ newspaper.

27.09.2010 Young Front activist detained and interrogated

On 25 September unknown persons detained Yaraslau Hryshchenia, activist of the Young Front youth opposition organization and leader of the Avangard People movement, the Young Front’s press-service reports.

21.09.2010 Detentions in Minsk

On 20 September Minsk police detained 12 activists campaigning for the return of St. Joseph Catholic church to believers. The police reportedly used force, beating some of the detainees. All the activists were shortly released without charges.

20.09.2010 Opposition activist beaten by unknown security guards in Belarus

Kanstantsin Zhukouski, a coordinator of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party in Homel, was detained by the militia at Call of Palessye festival in the village of Lyaskavichy and taken to hospital.

Medical officers diagnosed Zhukouski with “brain concussion”. According to medical officers, the oppositionist has to remain in hospital for 7–10 days, Radio Svaboda reports.

As stated to the BelaPAN by Yury Aleinik, activists of the civil campaign Speak Truth filed complaints to FIFA, UEFA and CHL against violation of their rights as fans by the police.

13.09.2010 Only about 20 people managed to get to ’Battle of Orsha’ feast

The traditional festival dedicated to the important historical date - the victory of Orsha in 1514 troops of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, was scheduled for 12 September this year. 8 September, the day of the battle, is celebrated as the Day of the Belarusian military glory by the opposition.

The leader of the civil campaign European Belarus Andrei Sannikau was detained on the way from a high-level international conference in Riga. His passport was seized.

10.09.2010 Hrodna: detention of Dzmitry Bandarchuk

The activist of the civil campaign Speak Truth Dzmitry Bandarchuk was arrested yesterday in Hrodna and is still kept at the police station of the Dzeviatouka suburb. The detention followed the attempt of the police to examine his car. The activist didn’t allow them to do it without showing him the warrant.

10.09.2010 Activists of 'Speak Truth' deatined at hockey match

As told to the European Radio for Belarus by the press-secretary of the civil campaign Speak Truth, Yuliya Rymasheuskaya, 12 activists of the campaign were detained at the yesterday’s hockey match between the Minsk Dynama and the Russian Torpedo (from Nizhniy Novgorod). The detainees were guarded to the Tsentralny District Police Department. This time, the police acted more violently than during the detention of participants of the football match between Romania and Belarus. The people were forced to take off the T-shirts with the Speak Truth logo. Police officers tore off the T-shirts from those who didn’t obey this order.

09.09.2010 New circumstances of Cameroonian Football Player Guy Toukam’s case

Several weeks ago 28-year-old Guy François Toukam who had been detained in Belarus for 44 days on accusation in forgery of the passport received an answer from Belarusian officials, from which it follows that he had allegedly refused from services of a counsel, that he had been provided with a interpreter from the very beginning and he hag even confessed that his passport had been forged!

09.09.2010 Detentions for pillow fight

The attempt to hold a pillow fight that hadn’t been permitted by the Minsk authorities ended with mass detentions. The action was dated to the 496th anniversary of the Battle of Orsha, which is celebrated by the Belarusian Military Glory Day by the opposition circles.

08.09.2010 Detention of five ‘Young Front’ activists near Russian Embassy

The Young Front members Ihar Aliakseyeu, Eduard Lobau, Ales Stasiuk, Vadzim Petryk and Dzmitry Yasevich were detained near the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Minsk in order to pass an address on the occasion of the Day of the Belarusian Military Glory (that is not recognized by the Belarusian authorities).

08.09.2010 About 50 oppositionists arrested before match Romania-Belarus

About 50 activists of the Speak Truth campaign were arrested by the police in Minsk at the Minsk stadium Dinamo. Those who came to the stadium were told to unfasten their coats. Those who were wearing T-shirts with the inscription Speak Truth (about 50 people) were detained. The civil activists Yury Aleinik, Dzianis Kobruseu, Aleh Miatselitsa and about 40 other detainees were taken first to the police room of the stadium and then guarded to police station #1.

07.09.2010 Statement of secretariat of Union of Belarusian Writers concerning detention of Mikhail Bashura

More than a month ago, on 6 August 2010, the member of the Union of Belarusian Writers, poet and editor Mikhail Bashura was forcedly detained. The investigation charged him with an ‘economical crime’ – the forgery of financial documents so that his wife could receive a bank loan. Ignoring the presumption of innocence and the possibility of a mistake, they charge Mikhail Bashura with the forgery of the certificate from the place of his work.
